Cranberry, mulled cider, and of course, pumpkin spice. For me, a season can be determined solely by sense of smell, and luckily, The Candle Lab agrees. That’s why the store has packed up its cherry blossom, sunflower, and strawberry jam candles and ushered in the fragrances of fall.

The Candle Lab began selling their natural, gourmet soy candles and custom home fragrances in 2006, and it’s easy to tell by their four locations that people love the shop’s 100 fragrances. An added bonus is that a candle from The Candle Lab burns cleanly and evenly for up to 60 hours! That’s thanks to the company’s specific formula of natural soy wax, cotton paper wicks, and pure fragrance oils.

The best part about The Candle Lab (besides its variety – hot cocoa? cake batter? Yes, please!) is that customers can be imaginative at the shop’s Fragrance Bar and blend their own favorite scents to create a truly custom candle. That’s right, if you have the urge to make a bacon + maple syrup (hm… sounds like breakfast in a jar!) candle, you can!

So, whether you’re looking for a gift for your coworkers, wedding or shower favors, or a special fundraiser, stop by The Candle Lab!

Q & A with Kristen (Manager of The Candle Lab – Powell)

1. What is the process for pouring your own candle?

The first step is to smell through our 110+ individual scents and write down your favorites on a worksheet.  Once they have been chosen, we’ll work together to help narrow down that list to two or three scents that will be mixed together. Then, a container will be selected from one of the many options we offer, and we’ll have you sit down at the Fragrance Bar to blend the scents together to your liking.  Once blended, the oil is poured into the container with melted soy wax and stirred for 30 seconds.  After that, you will make a label for the bottom of the jar.  The candles take at least an hour to set, so that is a perfect opportunity to take advantage of the awesome shops, restaurants and attractions in downtown Powell!

2. What kind of parties / groups does The Candle Lab host?

We host all kinds of events from birthday and bachelorette parties to bridal and baby showers.  We’ve had several great Girl Scout troops and corporate events with team-building activities as well.

3. What is your favorite scent?

Ah, the most popular question.  My personal favorite is Peppercorn – I tend to favor the spices over the florals or fruits, but it really does change seasonally.  I love Balsam Fir in the winter, Jade in the spring, Grapefruit in the summer and Nutmeg in the fall.

4. What is the best scent combination a customer has created?

We see a lot of creativity come through our doors, that’s for sure!  Our most popular combinations are fruit mixes, but I’d have to say that the Georgia Peach + Chai Tea combo from a friendly Girl Scout was one of the best.

5. What is the most “interesting” candle you’ve made or seen a customer make?

I try to tell people that if it wouldn’t taste good in your mouth, it might not smell good to your nose, but we still get quite a few Bubblegum + Buckeye or Dark Chocolate + Cotton Candy.  They always seem pleased with the results, so that’s all that matters!

We look forward to pouring with you!
